Coronation Celebration Festival

Though Slovakia may no longer be ruled by a monarchy, visitors to Bratislava between 24th and 30th June 2019 will still have the opportunity to experience an extravagant coronation in person. This year, the coronation ceremony will be marked by the 302nd birthday of Maria Theresa, who was once crowned queen in Bratislava, and Emperor Maximilian II. The coronation insignia – sceptre, orb, sword, crown and mantle – are handed over to the new ruler as part of the traditional liturgical ceremony, which takes place directly in the Main Square.
NEW: Become king or queen for the day by celebrating your own coronation in Michael’s Tower. A coronation photo video point creates an authentic 3D model of yourself in period costume with the coronation insignia.
In addition to the Imperial Guard, the Hungarian hussars on their horses, the guardians of the coronation insignia and the Hungarian nobility, the members of the royal family also take part in the procession. At the same time, there is no expense spared with the historic uniforms and costumes – 150 actors participate in the colourful spectacle.
Hungry spectators are provided for with stalls selling coronation goulash, coronation wine, kolbász (Hungarian sausages), roast pork, Bratislava rolls and beer.
Back in the day, the Habsburgs travelled to Bratislava by carriage. Were they still alive today, they would have chosen the new Twin City Liner
to arrive in style!
